30-50%Position SummaryPioneer Technical Services is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to be based in one of our permanent office locations (Montana, Idaho and Colorado) depending on the experience and work location needs of the applicant.
The position requires experience in multiple phases of geotechnical engineering consultation including the ability to review and understand project design documents, construction plans and specifications; perform geotechnical site investigations; support design teams through cost estimation, scope development, geotechnical analysis, design and field inspection.
The Geotechnical Engineer will perform the following specific duties:
Perform geotechnical engineering for civil/environmental projects including analysis and design for seismic loading, deep and shallow foundations, retaining structures, earth embankments, high hazard dams, hydraulic structures, landslides/slope stability, and ground improvements.
Work collaboratively with other engineering disciplines, including structural, civil, water resources and environmental.
Design, install and support geotechnical monitoring instrumentation such as vibrating wire piezometers, slope inclinometers, shape array accelerometers, and vibration monitors, along with corresponding telemetry devices.
Conduct technical review and project management for engineering, deliverables, schedule, and invoices.
Manage and mentor junior geotechnical engineering staff.
Prepare and review technical reports.
Conduct and oversee drilling investigations and field and laboratory testing of soil and rock for design and construction.
Develop scopes of work and budget estimates for geotechnical engineering projects.
Perform geotechnical construction observation.
Assist with business development and proposal writing efforts focused on geotechnical related work opportunities.
Skills & Abilities
Experience:
Minimum 5 years of experience in geotechnical engineering, analysis and design is required.
Education:
Bachelor's degree in civil or environmental engineering with course work in geotechnical related science is required.
Master's degree is preferred.
Registration:
Professional Engineer (PE) registration in the state of Montana or have the ability to obtain registration in the state of Montana within 6 months of the date of hire is preferred.
Computer Skills:
Must be proficient with Microsoft Office products and have experience with geotechnical and design related software such as the RocScience Software Suite (Slide2, Settle3, Swedge, and Dips), L-Pile, FLAC, and DeepEX.
Other Requirements:
The ability to communicate effectively and work as part of a team when solving complex, technical problems is essential.
The job requires strong written skills, interpersonal skills, as well as flexibility and enthusiasm in performing a variety of tasks.
Work Environment Our geotechnical department consists of 6 full-time geotechnical engineers ranging in experience from Senior Project Manager to Staff level.

Much of the work will be conducted within an office setting, but there will be occasional field work involved, primarily at projects sites in Montana, Colorado, and Idaho.
